Hi Susan, unless noted otherwise, we're calling for unsalted butter. In the case of an especially dry dough like shortbread, using salted butter can also be a good choice. If you choose this option, go ahead and leave out the added 1/8 tsp salt. Hope this helps! Mollie@KAF
