Cindy, our method for making a sourdough starter from scratch actually doesn't include commercial yeast of any kind, just flour, water and time. If you do want to use a pinch of yeast to get things going, the SAF Red can be used in the same way you would use ADY. Hope this helps! Mollie@KAF
