Hi Patsy, we do have a few thoughts to share. One is that we usually recommend thawing the cookie dough before baking. Given how cold it was when you left the cookies outside, they were probably frozen, rather than just drying out. We tend to dry at room temp, but we're sure your mom was onto something with the cooler dry out too, but letting them thaw may be key. It's also true that a higher temp can lead to more puffing/less retention of the molded shape, so you may want to try a lower temp. House on the Hill, who makes these molds, suggests that "the smaller the cookie, the lower the temperature; the larger the cookie, the longer the baking time at a lower temperature."
