Valerie, you're definitely not the first person to wonder this — we actually have a whole blog post on the topic! Feel free to visit it for all the details. In short, though, you'll want to mix a bit of your yeast with warm water with sugar dissolved in it. If you start to see bubbles after a few minutes, your yeast still has plenty of life left in it. If all is quiet and still, it's time to get a new batch. Hope that helps! Kat@KAF
