Hi Marylou! We wouldn't recommend that since it would essentially starve the starter as there wouldn't be quite enough flour or water to go around. To speed up the growth, we'd recommend using whole grains, such as rye or whole wheat, and using warm water, between 100°F and 110°. That should help things move along a little faster for you.
