Regarding baking steels, if they're too heavy you could always have it precision cut in half and edges ground smooth to fit together. That way it's more manageable. Too, you could have an oval hole cut in each piece to serve as a handle. Metal fabrication shops can make them for you out of A36 steel, if you so choose.
