Fun! I made two of these for two separate parties this week. A crowd pleaser. While the pie was baking I cut out my stars and stripes. For stars, I used a 1 inch bottle cap to cut circles, stacked them three high, then marked the top one with an approximate star using a knife, and cut out the corners. For stripes, a pastry cutter. I sugared them, then popped in the middle rack at 425 during the 1st bake for just 10 minutes, enough to set them up. When the pie was at 30 minutes and ready for the lower temp, that's when I put on the stars and stripes. No hot goo to contend with, and they kept their color nicely. Plus, since they weren't entirely baked yet they were easy to trim them to size without breaking.
