I grew up with my Scottish Granny and Mother making scones all the time. The recipe consisted of flour, sugar, baking powder and baking soda, 1/2 egg and butter. They were rolled out and cut in rounds, brushed with the rest of egg. Any pieces left over were simply rolled together jelly roll fashion and baked with the rest. If they added raisins, they were called German Buns. We split them like English muffins and put butter, jam, jelly or honey inside.
I went to tea at the Sally Lunn Shop in Bath, England and had scones served with clotted cream and strawberry jam.
My mouth is watering. Better go make a batch.
