Thanks for letting us know this has come across a little confusing, Ryan. I’m happy to help clarify.
Glyphosate is prohibited from use on the wheat that’s grown and milled to make our certified 100% organic flours (all of our organic flours are 100% organic). It may not be directly applied to that organic wheat at any time.
The USDA sets a residue limit of 1.5 parts per million of glyphosate on organic wheat, which is just 5% of the EPA’s residue tolerance that’s permitted for non-organic crops (30 parts per million) on which glyphosate is federally approved for direct application. The USDA sets this allowable amount on organic to account for the possibility of unintended, trace contact despite all organic standards and procedures being strictly upheld. As an example, it may not always be possible to guarantee against the possibility of trace amounts carried by the wind from adjacent non-organic farms.
King Arthur flour utilizes Quality Assurance International (QAI) to independently verify that the organic wheat grown and milled into our flour passes the rigorous standards required to be recognized as certified organic.
