I've made my mom's tried and true family recipe since I was tall enough to turn the oven on (umm 40+ years?!) and it always has a shiny crust! No chocolate chips were ever used. Hmmm. After looking at the KA recipe I believe the addition of baking powder (not in my recipe) might be the variable factor.
