The answer depends on what you're trying to "help," Maria. Lowering the oven temperature and baking the cookies for longer can help produce a crunchy cookie (bake for even longer and you'll get crisp cookies). If you only lower the oven temperature and bake for a shorter amount of time, the cookies will be soft and chewy, which might be what you're looking for.
