We're sorry to hear that your cake didn't turn out as expected, Elena, and can understand your frustration. This cake is a sponge cake, which traditionally consists of a whipped egg mixture with a small amount of flour gently folded into it. Most of the leavening from this recipe comes from the whipped eggs. When making a sponge cake, it's important to make sure that the eggs are properly aerated and then the dry ingredients are gently incorporated as to not deflate the eggs too much. Usually with a sponge cake, if the end result is a bit dense and didn't rise properly then the batter was overmixed. We hope this can help for future baking adventures!
