I have done this a few times with my starter and I did not know you were not supposed to, and keep it in the freezer. Last time I put some fresh stuff in there, I saw that I had kept some of the original stuff I did, it was almost 4 years old and I tried reviving it just for fun... it was ready to bake with in 3 days.
