Having been a snowbird to the big island for many years I am quite familiar with these buns. We often passed the bakery at the south end of the island. When we would stop there we were surprised to see that the buns came in many different colors such as purple and pink! This was due to different ingredients that were added to the dough such as passion fruit or taro (poi). All the colors made it difficult to choose which ones to buy but we never got one that we didn't like!
