We have been making the baked version of this for generations in my family. The bread is dunked in a mix of eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla (think French toast), then placed in a well buttered 9 x 13 pan. A layer of chopped apples that have been tossed in cinnamon and sugar comes next, followed by another layer of 'French toast bread.' Bake it at 350 degrees until the apples are soft and the bread is slightly crisp and flip onto a cookie sheet to serve. It is so apple-sweet that it doesn't even need maple syrup or powdered sugar. It works great with blueberries, too!
