My grandmother made this cake for my father's birthday when he was a child, and I continue the tradition using her original cast iron skillet. My father celebrated his 81st this past February. After reading your article, I was surprised that the base was a yellow cake. Grandma always made it as a dark chocolate cake. I'll have to try it your way!
