Hi Barb, because bread machines heat up the dough quite a bit, this can exacerbate the tendency of yeast breads made at high-altitude to rise more rapidly. Your loaves may be denser because they are falling during the baking process. Check out our recommendations for Yeast Bread baking in our High-Altitude Baking Guide. Reducing the yeast may be helpful, and you might also consider using the bread machine just for kneading the dough, which would allow you to incorporate refrigeration during part of the rising process.
