Hi A Layton! Add-ins can really brighten up a loaf of bread and make it feel special but they can also be a bit cumbersome. The main tip with using add-ins in bread recipes is to mix the dough to completion then fold in the add-ins only after the dough is well developed. This way the gluten is able to form nicely prior to being interrupted by stray raisins or chocolate chips. and this is often why bread machines have a slot to put add-ins that will release them only after the dough has been thoroughly mixed.
The amount of add-ins for a 1-1.5 pound loaf can come down to preference but the more add-ins used in the dough the lower the dough will rise. I generally prefer about 1/2-3/4 cup of add ins depending on how big they are. Using an additional 1/4 cup of a minor add-in like sesame or flax seeds would also be acceptable. Happy baking!
