These tips were really helpful. I had been thinking about the bread machine like a slow cooker, "don't open the lid!" Tweaking the dough at the 10 minute point makes a big difference. If you are not a gluten free baker, the addition of vital wheat gluten is another small thing that makes a big improvement in the quality of bread machine loaves.
