Ellen, these aren't baguettes, they're something a bit different – more like ciabatta, actually. In my limited experience with the recipe, they simply don't need slashing; they're unlikely to blow out along the sides or top, since they start flat (unlike a baguette, which starts fairly round). Try without slashing – I think you'll like them just fine. PJH
