Your story reminded me of some cookies that I make to this day. I spent my summers in Hood River, Oregon on an apple and pear ranch. My aunt taught me how to bake and one day we visited an older friend of hers and she shared a cookie recipe with me, Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. The difference with these and ordinary Oatmeal Raisin cookies, is that the raisins are ground up. This makes the best, CHEWY oatmeal cookie I have ever tasted.
