Is the Thermapen really the "Rolls-Royce" of digital thermometers? When I first looked at the picture, it looked pretty cheaply constructed (perhaps it is the body which appears to be made out of plastic). Is the quality of the thermometer stronger than it looks? What other options are also available for a reliable thermometer for testing the temperature of bread?
