Amy, there are a lot of gray areas in the brownie's history; Wiki and foodtimeline.org basically agree, though Food Timeline didn't mention the Palmer House. I guess you need to just choose which source to go with. I was interested in when the first "brownie" recipe for something that actually was what we know as a brownie was published; thus I ignored those molasses cakes, and the earlier recipes which were more cake than brownie. But - however it happened, I'm SO glad the brownie was invented, aren't you? :) PJH
