My grandmother used to send me stuff in college packed in the plain popped popcorn. That was my favorite part since I'm strange and like stale popcorn. Never had an issue with it--maybe since it wasn't overseas? Also, she would send my brother his birthday cake in the mail, she just always packaged the icing separately from the cake. He had to assemble it himself, but he didn't have to lick the icing off of the plastic wrap either. His birthday is also in January, so I'm sure that helped the icing stay okay during shipment.
