Great shipping tips! My son-in-law was deployed in Afghanistan last year at this time and we sent his platoon goody boxes for Christmas. We used packages of hand sanitizing wipes to cushion the bottom of the box and socks to cushion the top. Useful for the soldier and for the safety of the goodies in between. We used USPS flat rate boxes for APO use. I think they were the large ones. Make sure to pack them tight. When shipping goodies to our loved ones, extra space is the enemy.
