I always packed my college kids cookies and brownies in tins and made sure to stuff paper towels and some kind of filler like cardboard or bubble wrap into the tin to make sure the cookies were so tightly packed that they didn't move if I shook the tin. Instead of cake I made cupcakes, which I packed into a plastic container (also making sure they were shake-proof). Then I packed the frosting separately and let the kids do their own assembly. The cupcakes only got crumbly once, so my daughter and her roommate ended up eating them with spoons, but were thrilled to get them nonetheless! The tins all came home at holidays, ready for the next shipment of love from home! :-)
