Dave, they're REALLY good! And yes, you can halve the recipe and bake it in a 9" x 13" pan. Susan prefers to bake a lot at a time – as you can see from her story, she has a large crowd awaiting their treats. I've had my KitchenAid mixer for years and years – it's mixed and beaten its way through not just hermits, but bread and pizza dough, cookies, muffins, scones, brownies, to say nothing of mashed potatoes, meatloaf, granola, gazpacho... honestly, I use it multiple times a week, and this was even before I worked at King Arthur. If you like to cook and bake, it's worthwhile to save up for both a stand mixer and food processor; that's what I did, and I've never regretted it. Cheers! PJH
