Hi Elaine, one thing is for sure — tears won't help. We've heard that smiles and laughter sometimes do the trick to make dough rise, but tears often impede the rising action of yeast, so try to avoid it if it's at all possible. Like this blog points out, there are many reasons why dough sometimes fails to rise from the kind of yeast used, to the consistency of the dough, to the way it's kneaded, to the weather outside.
