We had exactly the same problem and it turns out to be a very common problem among many bread-machines. In fact, it's probably THE most common reason bread-machines start failing. The kneading knife is driven by a large capacitor (the same type used in washing machines which also do frequent start/stop movements), and typically starts failing after 8 or 9 years of regular use... the result is that the kneading arm has much more difficulty kneading the dough (you may hear it struggling at times). The good news is, a new capacitor only costs 10 or 15 €/$, and is super simple to replace (if you have a soldering iron, and someone who knows how to use it :-)). Once we replaced the capacitor in ours, the bread-machine kneaded perfectly again, and the bread came out great.
