Another candy that works beautifully is DumDums suckers. They now sell huge bags with as many as 16-20 different flavors and colors in each bag. The sticks come out very easily with a quick tap of a rolling pin or mallet. We throw several suckers of the same flavor into a gallon-size freezer zip-top bag and tap away, then remove all the sticks at once. Unwrapping and whacking is half the fun for the younger kids. Some of the colors are opaque, which creates some interesting effects. We'll often mix transparent and opaque candies of the same hue for a mottled look when the pieces melt and fuse together.
