Using a higher rack could be the difference between a nice golden brown and dark char Carolyn. As far as the look of the crimping after the bake, I suspect that this is just a difference of fat. Crisco tends to hold it's shape better but popping the crimped crust into the fridge to chill until just before baking will help some. Best of luck with your next pumpkin pie!
