Hi Kathy! Since this pie already has a generous amount of whipped cream on top to lighten the chocolate, I don't think meringue would add much to this pie. If you are suggesting to add this instead of the whipped cream, you certainly could do that but you wouldn't really have that nice contrast of light cream and decadent chocolate flavor, nor could you call it a chocolate cream pie anymore.
