Diane, graininess could be due to sugar that wasn't fully dissolved, which makes us wonder if your filling didn't cook for quite long enough on the stove top. Constantly whisking during this process is also important, as it helps to emulsify the ingredients and keep any of the mixture from burning. Straining through a sieve can help to eliminate any larger lumps, but it wouldn't necessarily catch "graininess". Still, we'd suggest including this step next time just in case.
