Here is my grandmother's ( born West Virginia, 1877) recipe, written by my mother. I can't figure out the words I have a (?) after. Suggestions appreciated. And yes, your descriptions of the smell when it was rising are right on! 2 med potatoes- Sliced + 1 T flour. Cover with Sotenin (Saturen?) water-add 1t sugar- pinch of soda. Place in warm place overnight. Thicken with flour, fairly stiff kp(?) rics (?) 2# flour Salt sugar- T shortening + water. Work 10-25 minutes. ( ie Knead) Shape in loves- Let rise- bake 1 hr
