The first thing I ever purchased from KAF was a salt rising starter. I keep checking to see if it will ever be carried again...sigh. It work exceptionally well. I had tried it without a starter previously and yes, it has a high failure rate... Better Homes and Gardens heritage cook book had a recipe for this as well. (circa mid 70's) However it doesn't stress the importance of maintaining the warm, constant, temperature.
