Hi Mary! You could make your own applesauce to use in this recipe if you'd like! Without the applesauce the don't won't have a prominent apple flavor but if that is ok with you, you could try replacing the applesauce with yogurt or puréed banana. We haven't tried either of these substitutions before though, so it'll be a bit of an experiment.
