My mother, a teacher, put together a similar dish in the morning, adding ham slices on top in the 1950's . She would put it in the oven and set it to start baking in the late afternoon, so that dinner would be ready when we all got home. She did add sharp cheddar as well. Thanks for reminding me that this is a great dish to serve!
