I think you did everything just fine, including mixing the ingredients for the starter. My guess is that it may have been a bit dry if it didn't bubble up as much overnight, or that the kitchen may have been a little cooler and the starter and dough were rising more slowly. This would make sense too that by the time the dough was braided, the dough was rising well.
Next time go ahead and mix the starter as you did this time, it didn't cause any issues. Just add a little extra liquid if it's looking a little too thick or dry, and find a nice warm spot to tuck it in overnight.
