Hi Mimi! Denseness and lack of rising are both characteristics brought on by whole wheat flour. One thing you can do to help your bread along is to add either some Vital Wheat Gluten or Whole Grain Bread Improver. Either add 2 tablespoons of Vital Wheat Gluten or a tablespoon of Whole Grain Bread Improver for every 3 cups of flour for stronger dough and higher rises. This will help larger air holes to hold their shape and cause the dough to be a bit stronger after slashing. Annabelle@KAF
