Hi Anna! Yes, you will want to discard a portion (save 4 ounces) and feed the starter twice a day. No need to get up in the middle of the night to feed it, just wait until the following day and get the starter onto a schedule that is more fitting to your routine, feeding the starter roughly every 12 hours. 

If you're weighing your starter, you don't need to worry about stirring it down first as the air incorporated into it won't affect the weight of the starter as it would the volume. You'll just want to weigh out 4 ounces, discard the remainder and then feed the 4 ounces that you've saved.
