Hi Laura! It's not a terrible anomaly so much as it's an unreliable result. It definitely can work on occasion! But we would be terribly sad if people put their whole reliance on freezing as a way of preserving their starter, only to find that they were one of many people for whom it didn't work and that they needed to dump out their decade-old starter and begin again from scratch.
