Hi Casey, it sounds like the math adds up here. If you started with 4.5 ounces of starter and added 4.5 ounces of water and flour, that's a total of 13.5 ounces. If you used 8.5 ounces in a recipe, you'd still have 5 ounces left to continue feeding. However, if you're nervous about not having enough starter to work with, you can always feed your starter with a greater volume of flour and water (try 6 ounces of each). If your starter is healthy and vigorous, it should have no problem "digesting" this larger meal. Happy baking! Kye@KAF
