I am very pleased with the results I've had since purchasing King Arthur Sourdough Starter in March of 2007 - over 10 years! I love your website as it answers so many questions I have had. In regards to the starter not going bad, I have had no issues with it turning pink or red or smelling bad. No matter how long I've left it unattended in the refrigerator I always manage to revive it. Time and again I've thought it would probably be ruined but it always revives nicely. I admit I treat it poorly between uses. In fact, this last time I didn't touch the crock for three months! It had lots of very dark liquid and little mounds throughout. Really thought I'd lost it but it came back so nicely and quickly and I'm so happy that it did! Don't think your starter has gone bad if the liquid is dark or it smells a bit like alcohol. Feed it before you throw it out - that's my motto!
