Starters take time, and many people give up too soon. Starters, when left alone, will turn very acidic, but can be revived by a regular schedule of feeding. The brownish liquid is the hooch, and can simply be stirred in, then the whole starter refreshed. Try it again, and be patient... it's a matter of pride to say you began your own starter!
