Ted, deep breath. This can be confusing until you have that light bulb moment. What you discard IS the unfed starter; they are one in the same. The unfed/discard is the inactive starter, the stuff you can either throw away or use in unfed recipes. The fed starter is the starter that has been given the flour and water AFTER discarding. It's the starter that is active and bubbly with a lot of movement. I hope this helps. Again, it can be tricky. We're always here to help clarify! Bryanna@KAF
