Kristina, it's a little difficult to diagnose exactly what is going on with your starter, but it sounds like it is still healthy, but perhaps responding to changes in the air temperature. If your house is very cold a heating pad might be okay, but you need to be sure that the temperature doesn't rise above 140 degrees, because this is the temperature at which yeast dies. Changes in the density of the starter (thicker) may also make it more difficult for your starter to rise. For more help with your starter, please call the Baker's Hotline at 855-371-2253. Barb@KAF
