I only clean my crock when it looks like it needs it.
I take it out, feed the contents, wait, take out a cup to make bread, scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula, and put it back in the fridge without feeding again. I bake bread about once a week, and I never discard before feeding -- no idea why I keep reading here that I should.
Maybe every four to six weeks I'll let the feeding take place in a separate bowl so I can soak and wash out the crock.
But as the saying goes, your (and PJ's) mileage may vary. :-)
