Hi Deb. Welcome to the world of sourdough! That initial mix with the whole wheat flour can be quite thick and sticky. As it sits and ferments, it will begin to loosen up a bit (there are some great images of what that process looks like in this article.)  As you continue with the feedings, it will begin to regulate itself and you should have something similar to a thick pancake batter.
