Hi Megan! You're gonna want it to live in an environment where the natural gasses that occur have a way to escape, and where the bad bacteria can't get it. So it shouldn't be a tightly-sealed environment. Sort of how a crock lid will keep it enclosed, but not airtight. Or we've seen folks use Ball or mason jars, with the lid on, but not screwed down tight (just enough that it stays on). We hope that helps, and happy starter!
