Let me start by saying that I have been a long time bread baker around our house, to the point that my home baked breads never lasted that long with the two of us, or even when our son lived at home! A number of years ago, I started making sourdough bread with King Arthur's Sourdough Starter, and found that after time, even their starter would get sluggish, after weekly feedings.
I overcame that problem by adding a pinch of sugar to the mix, occasionally, when it became sluggish! AND JUST A PINCH ONLY! No more, no less! That seemed to perk things up quite a bit, like giving your child a drink of gatorade(if you will). It worked until the next time the starter became sluggish again! Which was after several feedings and uses, and not everytime I either fed the starter or used some of it! And I always had fantastic breads, fresh from the oven!
